Learning Process

Teaching and learning activities in PSKIK FKIK UMY implements the full-block curriculum structure with parallel approach. There are a few methods done, which are lecturing, tutorials, mentoring, laboratory skills, field trip, and clinical practicum.

Credits for each course refers to The Decree of The State Minister for Research and Technology No. 44 in 2015 about the National Standard for Higher Education. Lecturing method is done in the form of student center learning and expert lecture at the end of module each for 1 credit of tutorial equivalent to 1 x 50 minutes x 14 meetings. Tutorials and mentoring are done for 1 credit of tutorial equivalent to 1 x 100 minutes x 14 meetings, while the laboratory skill/practicum is done for 1 credit of practicum equivalent to 1 x 170 minutes x 14 meetings. All activities started from 07.30 until 17.30.



Type of Activities



Tutorial A small discussion group with 10-15 students each group assisted with one tutor acted as the facilitator. Students will be given cases as the discussion trigger.

In tutorial discussion, a chairman and a secretary will be chosen. Both of them will act as the leader of the discussion. The chairman and the secretary will be chosen alternately for each scenario so every students will have the chance to be the leader of the discussion.

Tutors will help students in the discussion to reach the learning objectives without much interruption or giving much explanation into the discussion. Every students are expected to be able to express their opinions or analysis. Cases that are given at the beginning of the block will give students the chances to learn autonomously,

This PBL teaching and learning process is using seven jumps concepts. Seven jumps consist of :

  1. Clarify terms or concepts.
  2. Determine the problems.
  3. Problem analysis.
  4. Deduce conclusion from step 3.
  5. Assign the learning objective(s).
  6. Collect additional information (individual learning)
  7. Synthesize/examine new information.


Mentoring A coaching, permanent group briefing activity where two-way communication happened between Mentor and Mentee to exchange ideas or opinions.The mentoring steps refer to “Five Phase Mentoring Relationship Model”, based on Wheeler & Cooper which are :

1.Phase one : purpose.

Mentor and mentee discuss the learning objective to be discussed in the mentoring activity, to know and to make clear of each jobs and roles.

2.Phase two : Engagement.

Mentor starts the discussion in an interesting way and explains the discussed concept simply.

3.Phase three : Planning. Developing your mentoring action plan. How can I achieve my goals? How will we work together?

Mentor and mentee make plans regarding to the achievement of the objectives, what steps have to be done to reach the learning objectives well.

4.Phase four : Emergence. Engaging in the conversation. What we are learning?

Mentor and mentee start discussion process regarding the mentoring materials based on the arranged plan.

5.Phase five : Completion. Celebrating accomplishment. What are my next steps?

Mentee makes the result of the discussion in the form of conclusion and prepares the presentation material.

 3. Lecturing Lecturing is done with student center learning method and expert lecture at the end of the block. The chosen lecturer is an expert in their expertise, so it is hoped that they can give clarification regarding to the result of tutorial case discussion with evidence based practice (EBP).


Audio-conference It is one form of classroom activity where the students attend the class yet no lecturer present in the classroom. The lecturer gives material directly using long distance audio. One lecturer will be available in the classroom as the moderator, only to help showing the slides and as the facilitator between the lecturer and students. Audio-conference lecturing will be beneficial to facilitate students to get a lecture from lecturer or expert lecturer who is not available on the spot at the moment.
5 Enhancement Skill It is to train students’ skill by giving them chances to practice using the available checklist and accompanied by instructor (1 instructor for 5-6 students). To support this activity, nursing skill laboratory, mini hospital, and assisted village as community nursing laboratory are available.


Field Site Teaching/FST It is a field trip to health care places in the health care unit in accordance with course topic, to identify real life phenomenon and to discuss it with the supervisor or senior nurse. Students will be able to apply their critical thinking skill as the alternative solution to be presented in the classroom.


Plenary discussion Plenary discussion is done at the end of the module. Students will present the cases obtained from the field trip and get input/advice from expert.


Assessment Students should finish every assessment given by the lecturers, either an individual work or in-group work. The assessment given to increase students knowledge and insight about some topics and cases.
9 Progress test Progress test is a test to know students knowledge in the nursing science field. This test is done periodically, scheduled at the end of the stage and have to be done with every students. Progress test is done using computer-based test.


Evidence-Based Nursing (EBN) Evidence-based Nursing will be introduced to the students in their second year and the Evidence-based Nursing skill will improve students skill as the professional nurse. EBN learning will train students to think critically and criticize the result of nursing researches and increasing students in picking and applying verified nursing research to improve nursing quality.


International Student Exchange International student exchange held when the students reach the nursing profession stage. The purpose of this program is to introduce nurse profession in the international level and to give students chances to increase their knowledge and experience regarding the excellent program in the hospital where the students done their internship. This program will be done in 4 weeks, more or less.


Karya tulis ilmiah (KTI) Scientific paper is the “thesis” for all nursing students that is an obligatory. Research topics are hoped to give contribution to nursing field, in its practices, theories, and nursing research development as well as research competition.


E-learning E-learning is used to be one of the teaching media. It is a learning media through internet via Els program. Some topics in the course will be delivered in this e-learning, as well as mini-quiz.


PSKI PSKI is Islamic Nursing Study Center. There are some activities that needed to be completed by nursing students as academic graduating requirement, one of them is they have to pass the test held by Islamic Religion Accompaniment Division.
